Wild Boar to Baconfest: Pigs in History and Popular Culture program in Bishop Hill, Illinois

(Bishop Hill) - On Saturday, April 20, 2024, the Bishop Hill Heritage Association is hosting Wild Boar to Baconfest: Pigs in History and Popular Culture program provided by the Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speaker Bureau. In this lecture, author Cynthia Clampitt presents the history of pigs and pork to examine the impact these animals had worldwide. Clampitt will focus on the Midwest, including why poet Carl Sandburg would call Chicago “Hog Butcher for the World.”

Pigs were the first food animals to be domesticated, so their history with human beings date back more than 12,000 years. However, antiquity is just one of the reasons why pork is the most eaten meat in the world. This odd, paradoxical animal offers a great range of advantages when it comes to feeding large populations—especially urban populations—though, historically, it has also offered several disadvantages. Once pigs were introduced to the Americas, they became an almost instant success, raised by settlers but also valued by Native Americans. As the Midwest opened, pigs moved west and numbers grew rapidly.

Cynthia Clampitt has been writing and talking about food history for thirty years and has authored two books of food history. Her free one-hour public program will start at 1 p.m. in the Steeple Building Museum, located at 103 North Bishop Hill Street in Bishop Hill, Illinois. For more details, please call the BHHA at 309 927-3899, or email bhha@mymctc.net, or visit www.bishophillheritage.org.

Celtic Concerts Coming to Bishop Hill

John Taylor
john.r.taylor@gmail.com
309-299-4999

BISHOP HILL, Illinois—In the spirit of the season of St. Patrick’s Day, Bishop Hill Creative Commons is hosting two upcoming concerts featuring Celtic music and performers from Ireland and Quebec: Sunday, March 24th with Grosse Isle and Monday, March 25th with JigJam. Both shows will begin with a potluck dinner and social hour at 6:00 P.M., with music starting at 7:00 P.M., and are open to guests of all ages. A $20-30 donation is suggested, with 100% of the proceeds going to the artists. Below is a quick introduction to each performer. For tickets and more information please visit XroadsCC.org.

Grosse Isle

The traditional music trio Grosse Isle was born out of the “absolutely magical” collaboration between three exceptional musicians from Quebec and Ireland (The Irish Music Magazine). Together, Sophie Lavoie du Lac-St-Jean (fiddle, piano, vocal), André Marchand the legendary (guitar, vocal), and Fiachra O’Regan, Irish champion (uilleann pipes, whistle, banjo) shine with their rich and enveloping music. These musicians all have a national and international reputation as a duo mainly in the case of Sophie & Fiachra and within several groups for 40 years as far as André Marchand is concerned (La Bottine Souriante, Les Charbonniers de l’Enfer and others).

The band name refers to the story of the mass arrival of the Irish in the 19th century, on Grosse Île in the St. Lawrence River, as they fled the Great Famine. It is a striking encounter between two peoples and two cultures.

JigJam

When virtuoso Irish playing jumps the pond running naked through the wide open fields of bluegrass/Americana JigJam is born. Bluegrass and American Folk music originated from the group’s home, and now JigJam is here to take it back!

JigJam made its Grand Ole Opry Debut in Nashville in March 2023 to critical acclaim receiving a standing ovation from a sold-out crowd on Country Music’s biggest stage. The group was joined on the night by Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Steve Earle, Lauren Alaina, and many more. This Offaly and Tipperary-born band has started the first wave of attack in the new Irish invasion of Americana.

‘Foot stomping’, ‘high energy’ badassery is what you’re in for when you see this musical powerhouse live in concert.

Founding members from Offaly Jamie McKeogh (Lead singer and guitar) and Daithi Melia (5 String Banjo and Dobro) were joined by Tipperary-born Gavin Strappe (Mandolin and Tenor Banjo) in 2016. This year they are joined by Kevin Buckley (Fiddle) to make up this iGrass (Irish Bluegrass) quartet.

Described as ‘The best Irish band in bluegrass’ and ‘sparkling, infectious’ these lads have been hailed as ‘Ireland’s answer to New Grass Revival’.

Bluegrass has its roots in Irish music and Irish immigration. iGrass and JigJam is what happens when the Irish find their prodigal son.

Space for Food Pantry?

By Mindy Carls
West Henry News

Should the Orion Area Food Pantry continue to have space in a new or renovated village hall? Supporters of the food pantry are expected to present their case during the regular meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19.

At a special meeting on Sept. 29, 2022, Trustee Steve Newman moved to include at least 1,000 square feet for the food pantry. The motion passed on a voice vote.

At its regular meeting on Monday, Feb. 5, a year and a half later, the village board reviewed the most recent floor plan and cost estimate for a new village hall. The floor plan did not include the food pantry.

Trustee Mel Drucker said he was tired of Orion taxpayers paying for projects to benefit the Orion school district. A food pantry was worthwhile, but why was it the village’s responsibility to provide space?

Village President Jim Cooper said the food pantry could buy the existing village hall.

Trustee Bob Mitton commented on the cost of renovating or constructing a village hall.

“Is it going to get cheaper down the road?” Trustee Bob Mitton said. He is the chairman of buildings and grounds. “We will never get to the point where everything else is taken care of and now we can do village hall.”

After the meeting, the food pantry’s Steve Wright commented on the issue. The village hall has provided space for the food pantry since the mid-1980s.

The food pantry has a small office on the main floor of the current village hall, plus shelves and refrigeration in the basement, Wright said. It does not take up 1,000 square feet.

In a new village hall, 1,000 square fee would be more than adequate, he said.

The food pantry board has discussed options, Wright said. They include housing it out of town, or co-oping with another food pantry, such as Coal Valley, Colona, Cambridge or Sherrard, or disbanding. They have not discussed these options with other food pantries.

The Orion Food Pantry served 334 families in 2023. Seventy percent, or 233, lived in the Village of Orion limits.

Radium Girls Production March 8th and 9th

The Galva Jr/Sr High School Drama Club will perform Radium Girls at 7 pm on March 8th and 9th, 2024 in the High School gymnasium. Radium Girls is written by D.W. Gregory and directed by Jillian Rodseth and Joe Angelo.  In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease.

Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. Written with warmth and humor, and called a "powerful" and "engrossing" drama by critics, Radium Girls offers a wry, unflinching look at the peculiarly American obsessions with health, wealth, and the commercialization of science.

Tickets are $8 and are available at the door. Doors open at 6:15. Science sodas, t-shirts, and concessions will be available before the show.

In recent years Londen Fulks has sat in the audience of the Miss Illinois County Fair Queen pageant cheering on some of her closest friends, but this year she’ll have her chance to walk across the stage representing Henry County in hopes of being selected to reign as the 2024 State Fair Queen.

Londen is the 19 year old daughter of Jason Fulks and Nicole Fulks and is from Atkinson.  She competed in the Henry County Pageant last June, winning the title just four years after she was named the 2019 Junior Miss Henry County.

“It has been an absolute pleasure to represent a county that I love so dearly,” said Fulks. “I’ve learned a lot about my community, and I’ve made some incredible memories during my years as queen. I can’t wait to walk across the stage in Springfield and I hope to make everyone proud. “

Fulks will compete for the state title January 12-14 at the Crowne Plaza in Springfield. The state pageant is held in conjunction with the annual convention of county fairs, the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs (IAAF).

“I’ve been working primarily on interview and perfecting my speech,” said Fulks. “I have loved getting the chance to talk to past Henry County queens about their experiences at state and it’s made me that much more excited for this weekend. I can’t wait to make forever friends and memories.”

Fulks is contestant number 20 of the 73 young women competing in this year’s pageant. Each contestant will have a four-minute interview with the panel of judges, and will also compete in evening gown, swimsuit, and speech categories.

The top 16 finalists will be announced on Sunday, January 14. Each finalist will re-compete in the evening gown, swimsuit, and speech categories. They will also be judged on three pop questions. The new state queen will be chosen and crowned that evening.

2023 Lucia Nights in Historic Bishop Hill

11-27-23
Bishop Hill, IL

Historic Bishop Hill invites you to join our 2023 Lucia Nights (Festival of Lights) celebration on Friday December 8 and Saturday December 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. This Swedish tradition is based on a legend of Saint Lucia, Queen of Light. During a famine in Sweden, on the longest and darkest night of the year, Lucia appeared wearing a long white robe and encircling her head was a crown of candles. Legend has it that Lucia appeared on a ship laden with food. When the ship was unloaded, both it and Lucia vanished. Girls in Sweden today wake their families on December 13th carrying a tray of Lucia buns while dressed in a white robe and wearing a crown of candles.

Lucia Nights begins in Bishop Hill with the Lighting of the Park Christmas tree at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 8. The public is invited to bring edible ornaments to hang on the tree. Throughout the evening, businesses and museums will have Lucia Girls to greet guests. Around the village, each building will have a single candle in each and every window, and sidewalks will also be illuminated by candles. Restaurants are open both evenings. Special Christmas gifts will be on sale.

On both evenings, Bishop Hill will be hosting a wide variety of free Christmas activities. At the Steeple Building Museum, Hammer and Pick will be playing a variety of Christmas and folk music from 6 to 9 p.m. The VASA National Archives will have a closing reception for their A Sampling of our Samling exhibit. Also at the Archives, storyteller Brian “Fox” Ellis will share a medley of Swedish and Pioneer Christmas stories and songs from 6 to 8 p.m. At the Bishop Hill Fire Station, Barry Cloyd will be performing a variety of music from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., with Coffee Creek performing from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. The Peoria Cooperative Academy Madrigal Singers will be singing at the Bishop Hill Methodist Church from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Both Friday and Saturday, the Bishop Hill Community United Methodist Church will host its annual Soup and Chili Supper, beginning at 4:00 p.m. A free-will donation is appreciated to cover the cost of the meal. In addition, the Galva High School Choir and Wethersfield High School Choir will be going from building-to-building singing Christmas carols. Finally, Josh Christianson and Friends will be singing and leading Christmas Carols outside of J Goard Pottery from 6 to 9 p.m.

On Saturday, December 9 only, at 7 p.m., there will be an Old Fashioned Barn Dance at the Colony School. The Sangamo Stemwinders will be performing. All dances taught and called by Gail Hintze. Beginners are welcome and no partner is necessary. Also, the Krans Kafe is hosting horse drawn carriage rides from 6 to 9 p.m. A carriage ride cost $5 per person. However, children under the age of 1 are free.

Lucia Nights is sponsored by the Bishop Hill Arts Council, Bishop Hill Heritage Association, Bishop Hill State Historic Site, VASA National Archives, Bishop Hill Old Settlers’ Association, Bishop Hill Volunteer Fire Department, and numerous local businesses. BISHOP HILL, Illinois—The Swedish vocal quartet, Kongero will perform a live concert Sunday, November 26th at Bishop Hill Creative Commons, located at 309 N. Bishop Hill St, Bishop Hill, IL. The family-friendly show will begin with a potluck dinner at 6PM, with music starting at 7PM, and is open to guests of all ages. A $20-30 donation is suggested.

Kongero is a highly esteemed, world touring Swedish Folk'appella group singing powerful, evocative, haunting music and consisting of the four female folk singers -- Lotta Andersson, Emma Björling, Sofia Hultqvist Kott, and Anna Wikénius. Kongero was formed in 2005 when the original members all attended a Nordic folk music conference. By chance, they started singing together and found that their voices and harmonies blended perfectly. Since then, they have performed at many of the major folk music scenes and festivals and at several a cappella and chamber music festivals as well as doing tours all over Europe, Asia and The Americas. They also do church concerts, school concerts, tours, perform at business events, and conduct well-received workshops in traditional Swedish vocal music and vocal harmonies.

Kongero’s repertoire consists of traditional and original songs and tunes arranged by the members. Kongero tells tales of life, with moving love songs, dramatic medieval ballads, witty ditties, and spirited dances. Their music is characterized by tight harmonies, inciting rhythms and the clarity of their beautiful voices. With confidence, technical skill, irresistible playfulness, and brilliant arrangements, they create a unique sound that brings the traditional music from the past and into the present. They call their genre Swedish Folk'appella.

In addition to the evening concert, Kongero will host a free workshop from 1:00pm to 2:30pm, at the 1855 Dairy Building located at 410 North Erickson St, Bishop Hill IL. Participants will learn Swedish folk and Christmas songs and may have an opportunity to sing along with the group at the evening performance. This workshop is presented by the Bishop Hill Heritage Association as part of Bishop Hill’s annual Julmarknad (Christmas Market).
